Spot Light Corner: Miguel's Tribute to Zappa
Once again, the amazing artistic boundaries of fractal math is carried a step further... a cartoon! A tribute to Frank Zappa is a lovely nostalgic good hearted cartoon, dedicated to the greatest of all - Frank Zappa. It is so more effective due to its simplicity in a somewhat minimalist style, its clean cut lines and well defined areas. One look at the original Zappa's "en-face" is enough to show the amazing resemblance between the photo and the fractal. Notice the outstanding huge mustache, the sad downward drop of the lips, the long slender nose, the close set eyes, the thick eyebrows, what else do you need? And it fits so well in the Zappa's spirit, just have a quick look at the top right "portrait" of Zappa, transformed into the household dog with dark eyeglasses. Well, between the dog and the man, there is no doubt, the fractal is winning with a true reflection of the great Zappa and those lost days of comics, rock, wine and roses... Well, after all this elaborate analysis of the image, imagine now my surprise getting the author's remarks, about his interpretation of this image. This proves once again the truth, that interpretation of art, poetry and music is in the eyes, mind and ears of the beholder... So here is what my friend Miguel has told me: "Well, I have to tell you, I was a bit surprised by your 'interpretation' of the picture. When I first saw the image appear on the Fractint screen, I instantly associated it with a character from one of the funniest Zappa's songs. I'm referring to the bogus gurú from 'Cosmic Debris'. Anyway, I must admit it has some resemblance to Zappa's facial structure, specifically on the moustache... This particular picture is from an early batch of fractals, and when I decided to put a Zappa tribute on my page, I just recolored it a bit and 'voila'. BTW, the color palette is a modification of one from Jacco Burger. There was an interesting thread on the Fractint list some months ago, about Zappa and the fractals. We found that many of the artist were fond of FZ's music...." The curator March 2000 |
